Artist Statement

Our memories are often colored by nostalgia. Through my artwork, I seek to do away with rose-colored lenses and provide a more authentic view of childhood.

Each of these pieces depicts a memorable moment in childhood commonly recalled as joyous, when in reality these experiences may not be as jubilant as we might remember. The birthday parties we longed for might not have turned out the way we hoped. The sweet summer treat that was so eagerly anticipated was as vulnerable to gravity as it would have been gratifying. A single broken rope may dash the hope of spending a fun-filled afternoon at the park.

My choice of material is reflective of my interest in childhood. In my work I use simple materials, namely wood and papier maâché. I associate these materials with the simplicity of childhood and their ties to childhood creativity and art making.
